It's not quite the 29,600 jobs added between February 2010 and February 2011, but it's still a healthy year-over-year gain nonetheless. The 1,135,800 jobs are the second-most for any February, with only February 2001 having more. Let's hope that Pittsburgh keeps up the momentum.

That's great. Let's keep the job news coming for the entire year! Too bad government jobs are keeping us from higher numbers, but at least we don't rely on them as much as other areas and I wish manufacturing would go gain jobs.

That's great! I too saw a list that said Pittsburgh was in the top 5 of "growing economies" in the US.

Great news! Any details on how these employment numbers break down on a sector-by-sector basis? It would be helpful to know if the jobs being created are a reasonable substitue for those we've lost since '2009.

Here is a breakdown by sector:

Pittsburgh, PA Economy at a Glance

Percentage-wise the largest gainer was mining and logging (that is likely mostly natural gas related). But if you looked at gross numbers, recently we have been getting good gains in construction, and the real heart of our recovery has been in white collar sectors (financial, business and professional, and eds and meds), which in fact have been growth areas since before the Great Recession as well.

I don't have statistics for this handy, but I would bet you dollars to donuts that the net effect of all this has been to significantly increase mean per capita compensation for our working-age population. It also goes along with a matter we have frequently discussed, which is that our younger working-age population is incredibly well-educated (among the top few metros in the country by that measure).
