Slots revenue was up 9.8% year over year in March:

Pennsylvania casino revenue reaches monthly high - Pittsburgh Business Times

The state overall was up 8.5%, so Rivers is doing relatively well. Meadows was only up 1.67%, and is now solidly behind Rivers. There was some doubt early on if Rivers could compete with Meadows (tales of grannies being too scared to enter the big city and such). That doesn't appear to be an issue, as it turns out.

Wow I helped with that a little so far this year at both casinos . I'm hoping the revenue increase is more because people have money to spend again and not becuase people are getting addicted.

I'm also a little skeptical that a casino doing well financially actually has any bearing on the overall financial health of an area. I can also only hope that this is an example of people with money to burn (aren't there more productive places to spend money than at a casino?) rather than a sense of desperation or addition. I'd rather the money be donated to some local cultural institution.

One broader relevance to this story is that Rivers is contributing a lot to various local entities, through various specific deals and also property taxes. Its very early performance was disappointing--of course this was also in the middle of a huge recession--so there was some concern it might default on some of those payments, and in fact it is still contesting its property value assessment, citing in part the fact it underperformed its revenue expectations.

Generally this is not my favorite way to raise public funds, but having committed to this course I am hopeful it does well.

Yeah, it certainly doesn't help anyone if the thing goes under.

Which casino do city-data people prefer? (I have no opinion as I have never been to a casino.)

They're all fairly depressing seeing bus loads of elderly spending away their SS income one slot at a time - its oxygen tank central in there.

I'm no expert, but I did go to Mountaineer one time a long time ago (walked away at +35 bucks, HA!). But then that sleazy guy took it over and started making those annoying commercials. I vowed "never again." I'm not against casinos, just that one.

Depending when you go, the Rivers can have a fairly youthful demographic. It's certainly less "granny-central" than most other casinos.

It's the same way in Las Vegas and Biloxi. I've seen it myself.
