CMU, ironically enough, seems VERY VERY slow on any responses. When I applied the seemingly endless job listings there, i would literally get "confirmation" of submital emails 6-7 months down the road. Obviously never heard anythign with them..

I think Universities always have a steady flow of applicants. Heard to break the pack. Love to hear how some people (or yourself) have.

I'm local. And there are two jobs that have been on the CMU site off and on for the past few months.

Based on my very particular experience and the job requirements, I'm relatively confident I'm one of perhaps five people in the metro qualified to do these jobs. In addition to my credentials I have excellent references which are published online. Yet I can't even get an interview.

So my advice to you is not be in your 50s.

Keep in mind Luabear's insightfrom Pitt. I have a friend who works at a tech company and she offered me a position there, but said they'd have to go through the process of posting, interviewing, etc. just as a formality. It's a pretty despicable environment, and it seems pretty common, because, ironically, the idea is to prevent **** like that.

If you know anyone in Pittsburgh that you'd temporarily be staying with for a few weeks once you move here, use their address on your resume/applications.

If you can manage to find out the names of relevant people in the department, a direct e-mail on the side can work wonders. Luckily, educational institutions' faculty and staff info isn't too hard to come by.
