And what do you think about the schools? Are shops nearby or is it too suburban?

Commute. Ok Inbound, sucks outbound until 28 gets done in a few years.

Schools=Very Good

Shopping=Ok, mostly Waterworks and Fox Chapel Plaza. Pittsburgh Mills is not too far either. It is suburban in atmosphere although the Waterworks proper is City Of Pittsburgh. It is car centric, with the exception of walkable towns within the school district, namely Aspinwall and to a lesser degree Sharpsburg.

It's convenient to shopping in the East End neighborhoods (Shadyside and Squirrel Hill) too.

It's very suburban but also extremely close to the city, so it sort of provides the best of both worlds.

The commute is ridiculous if you use Freeport Road. The section of road from Fox Chapel Road to UPMC St Margaret is "move a few inches, feel inclined to let people leaving Waterworks in to traffic who don't have enough sense to go to an exit which is controlled by a traffic light, move a few more inches, and repeat again".

I live in the Fox Chapel area (O'Hara Township). There are plenty of shops nearby. I am 5 minutes from the Target in Harmarville and a nice Giant Eagle in the Waterworks. Pittsburgh Mills is easy to get to with very little traffic and takes less than 10 minutes to get there. As Hopes pointed out it is pretty close to the East End.

The commute is easy to downtown and is worse coming home but it is relative. The commute home, while bad, is still much better than most other commutes.

No one in the Fox Chapel area will use Freeport Road to commute anywhere. Traffic on Freeport Road is there because of all of the East Enders using the Waterworks.

Freeport Road has nothing to do with commuting from Fox Chapel to Downtown. Nothing. It's absolutely illogical to think anyone living in Fox Chapel would go to Freeport Road to drive Downtown.

So your northern suburban mind doesn't think that people who live in Fox Chapel either use the on ramp to 28 off of Fox Chapel Road or the ramp further down the road in Aspinwall?

Coming from Fox Chapel you would either get on 28 from Fox Chapel Road or use Lexington Ave Extension to get to 28. You would never use the stretch of Freeport in front of the Waterworks unless your commute to downtown that day involved stopping at the Waterworks.

To say I would never or anyone would never use it is ridiculous.

So you would use a route to commute from fox chapel to downtown that you've previously acknowledged as being ridiculous?

That makes no sense.
