Very cool...with Carnegie Mellon University, Duquesne and Pitt...I would say we are covered in the area of wonderful universities and some of these graduates are actually staying in Pittsburgh and calling it home....nice!

And looking at our young adult population specifically would rank us much higher:

49th out of 100 isn't very good.

It does appear to be thoroughly mediocre. However, as BrianTH pointed out, Pittsburgh performs much better in the under-45 segment... outperforming most regions of the country. Metro Pittsburgh's overall educational attainment rate appears mediocre because we still have an exceptionally large elderly demographic due to the demographic distortion legacy of the steel collapse. Pittsburghers of previous generations tended to be less college-educated than the nation due to the dominance of manufacturing occupations in the region. The educational attainment of retired over-65s has little relevance to the Pittsburgh economy today and in the future.

Yes, I know about Pittsburgh's hidden brain gain. The NYT article does a lousy job of teasing out the Brookings analysis. Alan Berube does a better job here:

Where The Grads Are: Degree Attainment In Metro Areas | The New Republic

So, despite Pittsburgh's mediocre showing, he celebrates the region's achievement. Given the data, it reads strange. He should have explained his comments.
