My niece's school district dismissed students after an hour or two on the last day of school. Basically, the students received their report cards and waited for the buses to come back. She was home before 10 a.m., and no meals were served. Informally, the district referred to it as a "turn around day", and it seems like most schools in Fayette County do something like this. Some even allow students to pick up their report cards and leave. Do any of your school districts have a really short last day of school like this? Wonder how that counts toward the 180 days?

I guess it makes sense, though. The students would be sitting there all day anyway.

I think it is very common. This is always the way we did it growing up.

Why the concern?

If the children are on the free lunch program, that would explain the OP's concern. I know next to nothing about the lunch program except that attendance is required for the school districts to collect funding. I was always under the impression that school districts couldn't have school without serving lunch because of impoverished children who rely on school lunches for their daily nutrition. It also raises the question of if the school district is claiming this day for lunch funding when they didn't serve lunch. I don't have answers. To the best I can remember, lunch was always served on half-days when I was a growing up and when my children were in school too. I always thought it was silly that lunch was part of half-days until I reminded myself that some children rely on school lunches.
