I worked at Mellon until five years ago when I decided to become a SAHM. But I'll be returning to Mellon in 3 years.

I hate Route 51. It's a crazy road to travel. You have to get the hang of it. Between lights, sometimes the right lane is the faster lane; at other lights, the left lane is the faster lane. You can add 15 to 20 minutes to your commute if you don't get into the proper lanes. Of course, it's just a flow of traffic thing so the lanes aren't marked accordingly. LOL

A start time of 10am with a quit time of 6pm will be a 15 minute commute from Shaler or Ross. (Some parts of Ross and Shaler are even less---literally minutes away.)

Yup, I'll third that -- 51 down that way is a bad drive almost any time. You'll find it endlessly frustrating -- not only congested, but stop and go, with tons of lights and turns. It's a maddening road even on a good day.

51 is bad, but I just remembered that I do know people who live that far south who take 885 to the Glenwood Bridge and then take Second Ave into the city. I have no idea how long that takes, though.

I prefer that route to 51, but it's still not as convenient as living in a nearby North Hills township.

A while ago, I started this thread re: the Squirrel Hill Tunnel, because it confounded me, as well. Hopes posted an old Post Gazette article on the subject. Interesting.
