There are so few direct flights from Pittsburgh now!

I'm sending a young adult on a plane alone for the first time.

Which airports would be easiest for a transfer? Philadelphia PHL or Chicago OHR?

Or would it be better to just drive to Philadelphia or DC for a direct flight?

Money isn't an issue. I just want to the first flight alone to be as effortless as possible.

Philly over O'Hare. Which DC airport? That might be better still.

But I'd say the crucial factor is having enough time for the transfer. Pretty much every U.S. airport is manageable if you have enough time.

I'm going to go with Philly too.

But yes, you are correct. It seems that Pittsburgh flights don't go directly to anywhere these days.

The shortest flights have transfers in Philly and Chicago. Flights are too long for DC transfers.

If we drive to DC for a direct flight, we can use DCI, AID or even Baltimore for BWI. Philly is also an otpion for driving to a direct flight.

Wondering which airport (DCI, AID, BWI or PHL) is the easiest to navigate alone after getting through the metal detectors.

I anticipate he will be nervous with it being the first time flying alone. And we haven't flown with him in quite a few years. (Probably the reason I'm not familiar since all flights I have ever taken were direct, except once in Atlanta.) I'm anticipating that it will be overwhelming---even for a direct flight since we won't be able to accompany him to the gate.

Just trying to figure out the overall least stressful way to make this first flight alone.

btw, the destination is Seattle if that matters.

Anything out of Cleveland?

I know SOMEBODY flies Seattle direct out of one of the New York airports. That's where DD and her husband transferred planes at Christmastime.

United has been cutting flights in Cleveland, too. I always like Denver as a transfer point on a long-haul flight - it breaks the trip down into two manageable segments of about the same length. And the Denver airport is very nice with shops and restaurants so it's not as boring as Philadelphia.

I checked Cleveland and Columbus. For some reason I thought there were no direct flights, but I checked again and there is one from Cleveland. It's almost $300 more than the other flights. Maybe that's the solution. I did say money wasn't an issue, and driving to DC or Philly would probably cost me $100 plus exhaustion.

Unless the person is very young I never found transferring flights to be much of a problem as long as you have adequate time between flights. Chicago is laid out easily enough & is at least getting you going the right direction.
