Does anyone know of any gluten-free restaurants or food in Pittsburgh and the surrounding area?

Restaurants, I'm really not sure, but I thought I'd point out that a bakery opened up in Squirrel Hill just the other day. It's called Gluuteny Bakery and it's on 1923 Murray Ave. All their products are both gluten free and casein free. They have bread, brownies, pies, cakes, cupcakes, and a couple of other things.

Wow -- thanks for the tip on the bakery. As far as gluten free food:

-- The "naked" burritos at both Chipotle and Qdoba are gluten free. Obviously there is a small risk of cross-contamination as they do use tortillas in the restaurant. We have no trouble with the food there though.

-- Tram's Kitchen on 39th and Penn in Bloomfield. Great Vietnamese. All the noodles are rice noodles, and the salads and spring rolls are gluten free. The dipping sauce that comes with the spring rolls may contain gluten, though as it seems to be hoisin-sauce based and that often contains wheat if it comes from a jar. But I haven't asked -- they make a lot of things from scratch there and that may be too.

-- Tessaro's is a good place to go when eating gluten free. You can just get your hamburger without a bun, or go for a steak or salad (ask about croutons). Again, if you're severely celiac, that might not work, but we haven't had a problem there.

-- Most non-wheat items at Boston Market are gluten-free. (Check the website.)

That's all I can think of off the top of my head -- we don't eat out much now that we are GF.

Thumbs up Gluuteny

Yeah, their opening was great. They had people lined up around the block and they sold out everything they had.

Apparently there's quite a demand for gluten free food around here.

It was good to see a small business get off to a good start.

I haven't been there yet, but I'm hoping they compete with Dozens to drive down the price of cupcakes in the area, which is just ridiculous.

Seriously, who would pay $2.50 for a cupcake?

Not me, that's who.

Not me.

I stood in line for Gluuteny on Saturday less than 2 hours after they opened. I bought some brownies. They also had like 2 cupcakes left by the time I got to the counter but I decided to let the kids standing in line behind me get them since they were talking about them (LOL). Everything else was sold out but they were taking orders for bread to be picked up later in the day.

I'm not on a gluten-free diet or anything. I just wanted to try the products out of curiosity. The brownies were really good, better than a lot of non-gluten free ones I've had. I'll be back to get more. They were I think around $2.19 for 5 brownies (They are small brownies) which I thought was pretty reasonable. I don't remember how much the cupcakes were but I think they were less than the $2.50 Dozens charges.

Maaz

Thumbs up Cupcakes

I had part of a cupcake at Gluuteny today. It was pretty good, and less than they are at Dozens.

My wife is something of a cupcake connisour(?) and she pronounced them light, with a good taste.

They didn't seem as big as the ones at Dozens, so perhaps further sampling is in order.

Default Gluten Free Pittsburgh

Bangkok Balcony on Forbes Avenue in Squirrel Hill is not GF, but they're very aware of the problem and have a wheat-free button on their ordering computer program. They know about cross-contamination and even caught an ingredient once that I didn't. They also will use your ingredients if you need to substitute--they have GF soy sauce, but used our chili paste rather than one with MSG for a dish we like.

My daughter has eaten at Bangkok Balcony with no problems as long as we're careful ordering.
