I will again disregard all your personal attacks that you seem to continually get away with on this forum.

The lowlifes tried to steal MY bike. I was there. I saw the aftermath and saw what they did to my bike and walked the recovered bike back into the store. Yes, believe it or not I was actually there and was involved with the end of that mess. Guess that isn't enough for you.

Of course I believe someone tried to steal h_curtis's bike.

However, when confronted with the fact that bike thefts are a (regrettably) common crime, including in many nice areas, h_curtis has gradually shifted to portraying this event as the equivalent of the bank-robbery scene in Heat. I see no reason to believe he is credible on that ever-evolving story.

Did we ever establish where the incident occured? I shop in east liberty quite often. I shop at the Home Depot, Target, The Village of East Side, Penn Avenue, Highland Avenue, and the Whole Foods area. I have never felt unsafe and I do not have a problem with my wife shopping there at any time of the day. I do agree that bike theft can be devastating. I do not believe that a person on a bike was assaulted at gunpoint for a bike. In my experience, most inner city bikes are stolen by children in the 11-15 year range. I think most bike thefts are a crime of opportunity..

Can someone do a poll for safety in East Liberty south of the bvld??? h_curtis has his opinions BrianTH has his opinions... Yet what about the rest of us???
I say it's livable (no gang activity besides in East Liberty Gardens) yet you better use street smarts so I put it in the level of relatively safe.

Sure, you can say that. I don't know if you've ever been to many parts of Europe, but these kind of petty thefts happen there ALL the time, and not on college campuses alone. My sister lives in Rome, and there are certain things you learn to do every day there to avoid pick pocketing. More so than you would in most any city in the US. Perhaps you should invest in a better bike lock. or one that insures your bike if it fails. City living sometimes calls for such "inconveniences"

I dont think street smarts is something that people can turn on or off. You either have it or you dont. I grew up in the city and attended city schools. I use my street smarts in all places from Homewood to Cranberry.

If I loved my bike as much as H Curtis, I would have put mulitple locks on my bike. When I park my car, I make sure that all valuables are out of sight and I also put the alarm on.

Yep. I have a rather nice Canondale, and when I first bought it I bought a $50 bike lock. That lock insures you for $1,500 if someone is strong/clever enough to break the lock and steal your bike. Simple things like this are just part of living in any city.

Hmm... I never care about leaving valuables in my car and frequently leave windows rolled down. But then again, I usually don't leave my car unattended anywhere in the city.

This could be a viable alternative to having fancy locks.
