My only experience with Blue Bunny is novelties. I think those are good; they have some junk in but not as bad as some and they actually taste good unlike most/all Good Humor and such these days. Have spoiled me for most others. No other ice cream sandwich for example tastes anywhere near as good as a Blue Bunny Big Vanilla, got me hooked again on having an occasional ice cream sandwich. Discovered totally by accident, shop that is close to office had Blue Bunny novelties. That shop is closed right now but I found the 7-11 on 6th/Penn has them too, plus another shop near my house. Very bad. But actually I don't get those much right now; because the Wexford Whole Foods has given me a convenient source of good cream, I've been making my own ice cream again. This is actually not a good idea either really, I mean, in terms of health, weight, etc.

I'm sure some forumites would be willing to take some product off your hands. You know, for your sake.

greg42,

I have to agree with you. Finding good ice cream is a mixed blessing.

Are there any places in Pittsburgh that serve their own make ice cream?

Even though it's considered a franchise, I like Coldstone Creamery. Expensive but good every now and then. Coldstone seems to be mostly in malls.

There are some in the wider area, mostly old roadside stands scattered around in surrounding towns. Out by me is Hanks Frozen Custard, that is good stuff.

Glen's Frozen Custard is in Springdale. Cranberry Creamery if they're still going (they've been on and off trying to sell that place) makes their own. And those are just a few in the north and west areas. I'm sure there are several others around.

In the city proper, I think Dave and Andy's still operates in Oakland, right? Not sure if there are others that I'm forgetting but that is one I know of.

That common misconception is why I thought Isaly's could be revived in Pittsburgh. It still would need good products along with the nostalgia. Bruster's Ice Cream is sort of a throw back in that it has ice cream stands with the sliding window to hand out the treats...just like in the olden days.

I've heard good things about Mulbery Street Creamery in Kittanning where its gelatos can be found I believe at Mercurio's in Pittsburgh.

It wasn't a Pittsburgh chain but it seems that Pittsburgh took it to heart better than most.
I would love to see it return as a retro store. They used to sell this ice cream with bits of different flavor fruit, Does anyone remember the name of that ice cream?

Isalys is still in business on rt.19 across from where West View Park used to be...

There is still a Winkeys standing in Wexford, it's a flower shop, it's on rt.19 north a little past Ritas... We used to go the the Winkeys in Bloomfield and hang out in the lot with our hot rods, drag racing across the bridge.

Anybody remember the Eat n Park on the Millvale side of the 40th street bridge...

I remember that ice cream with the fruit but I can't recall the name of it.

Remember the ham salad?
