I'd suggest west. The busway offers a commute into town that is at least as fast as the T (fewer stops). Crafton was rated as the best place to raise a family in Pa. Thornburg and Rosslyn Farms are a few of the higher end neighborhoods. Schools west are not as highly rated but are still solid. Another advantage is that you can easily reach all points north, south, and west without going throug a tunnel. Commute east isn't too bad save for rush hour. Shopping areas in Robinson and Collier are both nearby.

+1 on west. Go past the airport and into beaver county, lots of small town feel out here, raccoon creek state park is close as well as Robinson, montour trail etc. Central Valley is a good school district.

As far as commute, if he works in town he can catch the BCTA Route 4 commuter bus from Center which will get him to town in 45 minutes via the west bus way and save a ton on parking, gas etc. Bonus on not having to worry about the drama of the Port Authority.

So is there anything attractive about it, other than the commute? I see two parks, are there any rail trails or bike paths nearby?
Ben Avon is a nice suburb. In addition to the commute, the selling point for the neighborhood is that it has great old houses that don't cost a fortune (for a fair comparison you are comparing them to other upper middle class communities) and a good "smaller" school district.

Bike paths are along the Allegheny and the Ohio Rivers. Realistically you have very short drive to them.
