Is UPMC Presbyterian top grossing hospital? - Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Of course UPMC disputes all parts of this. Actually, I heard they are just getting by and that this is propaganda being spread by WPAHS, Highmark, SEIU, the Post-Gazette, and haters everywhere - so keep the tax-exemption coming, please.

Yay for for-profit healthcare and tax shelters. Crooks and liars, the lot of them.

I don't think that gross revenue is indicative of anything other than that they see a lot of patients. And since they're really considering four different hospitals to be a single entity, it makes sense that they'd be at or near the top.

Yeah, I want to see where those revenues are actually going.

Charging $4,000 for an MRI at UPMC St. Margaret's is paying off in a big way. This kind of stuff is really hurting us because healthcare is so out of control expensive. Think about how many arms that has. School taxes effected, state employees and the list goes on. Thanks UPMC for us paying for all that in taxes and oh wait, the kicker? You pay no property tax in return! Yahoo!

Not sure how significant that is. The Cleveland Clinic was a close second and if you put the two Philly hospitals together, UPenn Hospital and Temple U Hospital, they'd exceed UPMC. Besides, the medical sector is supposed to be a major industry for Pittsburgh.

Gross revenue is a broad measure and not informative about operating expenses, what the total operating income is, or what it is for various departments, etc., so there is a lack of information. It would be interesting to see revenue per bed, or average employee wages.

Interesting that 29% of the revenue of the top 10 grossing hospitals comes from PA. Does that mean PA has particularly high hospital costs, or that the systems here are more concentrated? Numbers 15, 26, 36, and 48 are in Pennsylvania as well. PA is the 6th most populous state, so it might just be high general population with a lot people being admitted. The Becker's chart is very broad, and maybe a little vague when it comes to calculating revenues for certain hospitals or the systems they may be part of.

Here are some articles that touch on UPMC's margins:
UPMC operating income jumps 75 percent - Pittsburgh Business Times
Admissions, jobs increase at UPMC - Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

UPMC still isn't as large as some other Pittsburgh based companies. They and Highmark are the only two in the following list that are tax exempt and - other than Giant Eagle - UPMC is the only one that draws an extraordinarily high percentage of its revenue from regional residents (CMS is sort of national and patients may be insured by plans funded by national employers, etc., so maybe it's a wash) rather than a global or national presence (Highmark is quite dependent on regional customers, too, but has more national revenue sources than UPMC).

Total revenue in billions:
Alcoa.......... 25.0 - AA: Income Statements, recent and historical, for Alcoa - Wikinvest
USS............ 19.9 - X: Income Statements, recent and historical, for UNITED STATES STEEL CORP - Wikinvest
PNC............ 16.0 - PNC: Income Statements, recent and historical, for PNC FINANCIAL SERVICES GROUP INC - Wikinvest
PPG............ 14.9 - PPG: Income Statements, recent and historical, for PPG Industries - Wikinvest
Highmark..... 14.78 - Highmark revenue up, net income down - Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Heinz.......... 10.7 - HNZ: Income Statements, recent and historical, for HEINZ H J CO - Wikinvest
UPMC.......... 10.19
Giant Eagle... 9.3 - #36 Giant Eagle - Forbes.com
Dick's.......... 5.21 - DKS: Income Statements, recent and historical, for DICKS SPORTING GOODS INC - Wikinvest
AEO............ 3.16 - AEO: Income Statements, recent and historical, for American Eagle Outfitters - Wikinvest
Koppers....... 1.54 - KOP: Income Statements, recent and historical, for Koppers Holdings - Wikinvest

I also believe they are the only company that has enough disgruntled workers that it bothers to maintain an anti-union website: UPMC Cares
