Brookline is a great opportunity for a first time buyer. The only downside I see is its accessibility to downtown. I'm not sure about public transportation to and from Brookline.

Driving to downtown during rush hour it generally takes me 25-35 minutes from my driveway to the parking garage depending on when exactly I leave (generally between 7:00 and 7:45am). Going home is about the same, though last night I drove through Allentown, hit all the lights perfectly and was home in less than 20 minutes. The 39 bus runs about every 15 minutes during rush hour and its 24 minutes from Brookline Blvd/Pioneer to Wood Street. Parts of the neighborhood are walkable to the T. (I'm about a 10-15 minute walk to the Potomac station.) Non-rush I can drive downtown in 10 minutes.

Tinare,

Brookline has some beautiful housing stock and a wonderful sense of community. I was particularly interested in the carniceria mercado located in the business district. I wanted to try their taco for authenticity. Unfortunately time didn't permit me to visit that part of the city.

You missed out. They are yummy. It's been nice because the success of their taco stand has lead to Pitaland in the next block setting up a sidewalk Gyro stand, so that corner smells wonderful.

I'll definitely make it a point to visit the area the next time I'm in the city. I'm hoping to get back at Christmas or by next spring.
