The latest Greater Park Place Neighborhood Assoc email update (7/17) also had this discouraging news:

More disturbing, however, is a report of a home invasion Friday night just after dark on Tuscarora Street. The couple was at home when two men in their 20s enterted through their unlocked and open front door. The suspects are described as:
  • One is African American, about 5'8" and 150 pounds. He was wearing a hoodie and was armed. He has a dark complexion, acne scars on his face, and his hair has been coiled or braided in sections by a hairdresser.
  • The second man was lighter skinned and larger, and may be Hispanic. He has short hair and appeared to be about 5'11", 200 pounds.
They took a purse and left quickly. They pointed a gun at the couple and threatened to beat us but left without harming them. The poolice came and dusted for fingerprints

Well, it made that little paper. Just glad they were not harmed, but I am sure they will be shaken up for a long time. Unfortunately once there is a successful robbery there will be more that follow. Sort of like all the bicycle thefts in East Liberty. They have had a lot of success there and it will just continue until a bunch of people get caught.

that is really terrible. definitely a bad sign.

in the article, nina says that she heard from the police that a lot has been going on, so there definitely could be some merit to what she says. of course we don't know the context - a lot going on in the last few months? weeks? that day? this year?

When we first moved in on East End Ave, our neighbor scolded me one day because I left a window open facing our deck, which admittedly is very low and would be easy for someone to come on in. So we are locked up like a fortress on a daily basis. We also take steps like not leaving loose change or car chargers in our cars, anything that may draw attention and make someone want to break in to our cars.

That's what I wanted clarified. I'm very in tune to what's going on in the neighborhood, and haven't been made aware of any spike in crime lately.

WTAE was also circling with their helicopter and were filming when we went by, but never saw it on the news.

Regarding East Liberty, I'm convinced that there is a large scale bike stealing operation going on there. I was a victim the first week I moved in.

Shame you need to live in a fortress to feel comfortable. I don't envy that kind of stuff. At least the summer is going to end in a few months and the winter will be here, then people can take a breather from all this crime, or at least it slows down. Guess the only thing to do is have a lot of security measures in place or move out of the city. A choice lots of people have made over the years.

I think there is as well. Too many bicycles stolen and non are recovered. There must be a place for the thieves to drop it off to be sent elsewhere. Pittsburgh is too small for these bikes to stay local, IMHO.

I love our home. When I'm home (and it's not 100 degrees) we have windows open and go about life just fine. We just never take chances when we aren't home. We have central air so it always stays nice and cool.
