I am really happy about this! Pittsburgh needs some affordable acommodations for would be travelers. Couch surfing and airbnb.com are cool ideas, but the hostel will give access to more people wishing to visiting this hidden gem! Props to the owners for using a pay it forward model, although I wish that more of the people would have paid for their generosity.

Potter admits the current experience is something between couch surfing and hostelling. The three-story home can accommodate up to 4 guests (comfortably), and features an information desk with maps and guides, basic amenities, and loaner bicycles.
It'll be the day when this place houses more than 4 guests, almost like a $10/night Los Angeles listing on airbnb. Actually, I don't see it getting to that here. If this place is consistently successful, perhaps another hostel will open like the one we had in Allentown.

That building has been the Zone 3 police station for a few years.

There are plenty of cheap places to stay in the area, just not directly in the city. Buskey's Motel up on Route 8 is still dirt cheap. Is the old place up on 19 in Wexford still around? I think it was the Avalon. There use to be a couple of $30 a night places near the I79/I76 interchange.

That isn't the city. How is a walker or cyclist going to enjoy the city from those places? Most people staying at hostels are on foot or cycle.

Doesn't really help you much if you're coming in via Greyhound or Megabus. Anyway people who want to stay at a hostel aren't going to want to hang out in Wexford. What would they do there?
