As we all know, educational attainment in the Pittsburgh MSA has a strong correlation with age. Younger age cohorts in the MSA are not only far more educated than the older cohorts, but they're also more educated than the younger cohorts in most other MSAs.

Well now the Brookings Institute has illustrated a pretty strong spatial correlation as well, but not at all what people like Paul Steigerwald would believe. According to him and his ilk, anybody who's smart would get the hell out of the city and into the suburbs, specifically the suburbs outside of Allegheny County. Too bad that hasn't happened at all.

In fact, Pittsburgh's suburbs are the laggards in educational attainment. They only match the city in terms of high school and associate's degree attainment. Otherwise, the city far exceeds the suburbs in bachelor's and graduate degree attainment, as well as the proportion of people with "some college" experience. Behold:

High school, city

High school, suburbs

Some college, city

Some college, suburbs

Associate's degree, city

Associate's degree, suburbs

Bachelor's degree, city

Bachelor's degree, suburbs

Graduate degree, city

Graduate degree, suburbs

So now we know that younger people and urbanites in the Pittsburgh MSA tend to be more educated, while older people and suburbanites tend to be less educated.
