Does anyone know more details about the accident? The most I could find was on WTAE where they said the car also ran into a pole and stopped.

As far as the "bike in the center of the lane" topic, when I stop at redlights on my bike, I always go to the center of the lane. On a green light, I can generally keep up with the car in front of me for a bit, then I move back to the side of the road. I just don't trust staying on the right through the intersection incase some car radically decides to turn right.

And for h_curtis, when I drive, I follow every speed limit in the city. I've never been honked at, but people try to ride my rear bumper. Lucky for them, I haven't had to slam on my brakes to miss a squirrel, yet. You do have a valid point here, and I only see city cops setting up speed traps on Banksville Road every so often.

if i owned one of the buildings within that 2 block area, i would set up one, maybe two cameras on my own dime. it would be not only for such a situation like this, but for a mugging, assault, etc. of course it wouldnt PREVENT it, but all the 'rules' are there to prevent car surfing over a bicyclist. the problem is no one follows them!!!

not far from there, last year, people on bikes had things thrown at them. lovely people over there.

the police have got to act now. they have to set up a speed trap.

scott - i heard from the radio this morning that the van (figures) hit the pole, stopped, then kept going. therefore, a hit and run (my words).

Sister in law just told me there was another hit and run involving a cyclist this morning in Swissvale. Can't find a news link on this yet.

How about this as a solution; don't allow bikes on actual roads. For the most part, bikes want it both ways....treated as equals with cars except no registration, no insurance, no regards for red lights or stop signs, no regards for maintaining minimum speeds. Roads are for cars, motorcycles, trucks, motorized vehicles that can maintain reasonable speeds. Are cars or motorcycles allowed on bike trails? I would think the answer is no, and that's reasonable. It wouldn't be safe to mix cars in with the bikes on the trails. How then is it safe to mix bikes in with the cars on roads? I don't understand why this is something that has such advocacy, and engenders such self-righteousness.

tclifton, sorry but roads are for bikes as well. I see more motorists flaunt traffic laws every day than I see cyclists, and before you assume anything I definitely drive more than I ride. I don't understand how you can't understand that there is a need for bike advocacy groups, I am being self righteous for expecting people to treat me with common decency and respect?

I think the reason you see that is sheer numbers. By percentage, I see far more infractions by bikes that I ever do by vehicles.

And it's not about decency or respect. I respect cyclists. I just think that roads are not a place for them. Mixing them with cars is a bad idea for everyone. Like I said in my example, how would you feel about 4x4's being allowed on the bike trails?

Your argument is irrelevant, and those idiots DO ride on local trails. Go to just about (not Mellon, Point State, of course) city park and see the 4 wheeler tracks for yourself. It means nothing that you think "mixing cars and bikes" is a bad idea, it's the way it has always been! It's the ATTITUDE that has to change. If there wasn't such a hostile attitude towards cyclists I believe we wouldn't be having this conversation.
