Pretty sure it's open season on coyotes in Alleghney county. i know a guy who killed one while turkey hunting. When I asked him if he had a tag for it he said you don't need one, they can be hunted year round and so forth.

Several years ago, a black bear was spotted running through East Liberty and he was tracked until he entered the Allegheny River. Apparently these critters are pretty good swimmers.

When I lived in Bellevue, I saw deer walking the streets, as well as over on the South Side near the old Knoxville Incline.

Lots of wildlife right in the city.

If you get a good vantage of the city, say from the bridge on 28 over Little Pine Creek, the wilderness that this city was built in the middle of becomes clear.

This thread continues to amaze me, but I shouldn't be: we had chickens in Philly (we lived in the city, along a rail line) and unfortunately a fox decided that they were too tasty to live and let live - he took a several. So we too the chickens to a safer place, and I've missed eating eggs ever since.

Here in Polish Hill I regularly see wild turkeys in Frank Curto Park along Bigelow Boulevard. One day while running I saw some rustling in the deep brush beside me and noticed two deer bouncing around on the small slope between West Penn Park and the 28th Street Bridge. My partner witnessed a deer get creamed on Bigelow Boulevard at the Bloomfield Bridge last year while driving home from work; the poor creature was launched over the sidewall into the small patch of brush next to Blessing Street.

I don't see many rabbits here, unfortunately, due to the neighborhood's high population of irresponsible pet owners who permit their cats to roam freely. I do see quite a few unique birds, though, especially cardinals and doves. One day last year I remember the sky over the huge green dome of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church was almost pitch dark because there were so many crows flying overhead.

I didn't want to create a whole new thread for this, but the urban deer have obliterated my knock-out rose bushes and hostas in just the past week. The bushes still looked pretty good for fall--new branches and flowers all over. Until the deer came around and defoliated them pretty good. And have left giant piles of deer crap everywhere. When does deer season start, again? Of course the jerks are probably safe within the city limits, but still.

That's just their nature. If the deer start leaving giant piles of dog crap around, then you know they're after you intentionally.

You can tell I'm a city girl because my first thought upon seeing it was "what kind of dog did that? And how did it get into my backyard?"
