For me the question is more "would we want to" than "can we" and the answer is "heck, no". The G8 was bad enough and that was only a couple of days.

It was the G20.

One big difference is the G20 was more or less a private affair that Pittsburgh had to put up with. The Olympics is really like a big street(s) party that lasts for 2 weeks. You can avoid it if you want but it's just as easy to participate in a big or small way. And the G20 left nothing behind while the Olympics adds a lot of infrastructure. The trick is to avoid having a debt legacy and LA, Atlanta, and technically even Salt Lake achieved that.
