I thought we didn't like the Waterworks because of the traffic on Freeport... it is a strip mall, but I thought that's what suburban folks liked. So fickle these terrified fc folks are.

I knew a guy that worked as a manager of a store at Waterworks. He hated working there and his comments were borderline racist. He flat out told me that he follows the black kids from the city around the store because they steal so much and cause so much trouble there. It was strange because this guy was flamboyantly gay. An obvious gay guy discriminating against a black kid...I guess he didn't see the irony in that.

In 2006, a woman and her child were kidnapped and taken to Ohio in front of the Giant Eagle. That's why you always see a Pittsburgh Police officer at Giant Eagle

Is there an answer, or is it just something we all have to get used to and just no care about?

Overnight Shooting Claims Another East Allegheny High School Student « CBS Pittsburgh

Just sad stuff really.
I my opinion guns are too easy to get to. For God sake, at Market District they make it more difficult for one to buy a bottle of wine that it is in sporting goods store to buy a damn gun. And we were wondering why we have these shootings? Go figure.

On a tangent note here, please someone explain to me how it is possible for someone who is poor to live on government money? As far as I know unepmloyment is given for a period of time (maybe o year?) and that's it. Why these people whom you say sit all day on the porch and drink beer collect money instead of working? Aren't there social workers to figure out these people can work and try to address the situation? Aren't their benefits - whatever they are - only for a limited time?
I mean this is not Canada. I know in Canada is like this, but here?

"Hoodrat Monroeville Mall"?

I guess I'm just waaaay more oblivious to these things than some people. Going to Monroeville Mall or the Waterworks doesn't feel like I'm slumming it, It's not like it's something I am willing to put up with, there's just nothing that I even notice with which to put up...excluding the Walmart dress code of course.

We don't mind Waterworks at all. We love the theater, love eating at La Capella and IchiBan, the guys at the Gamestop are probably my favorite to deal with (even though I can walk to the Squirrel Hill store), we shop at that Giant Eagle and also eat at Panera and Burgatory. Wal Mart seems to be the major destination for the ghetto superstars, but other than that, we've never felt threatened or unsafe. Great place to people watch.

There is a reason people congregate of all types you know. Everyone chooses neighborhoods for these reasons. Don't act all high and mighty. You are like everyone else, except you like to point a finger and judge the different styles of neighborhoods. Jealousy? Don't know? Do you think people living in a $500K plus home or a mill is going to shop at 5 below? The crappy Waterworks wasn't designed for the people who live here. It was deigned for lower end city dwellers that can catch a quick bus ride. There was no shopping in the city except Walnut Street and that catered to Shadyside/Squirrel Hill, so it was too expensive, so the Waterworks was born. I thought it would mellow out when Target opened, but it is the same. Cops everywhere, theft all the time, people yelling and screaming on cell phones holding them in front of their faces because they think they have to for some reason and hoping they are seen by other people yelling into their cell phones. Litter and the list goes on. It is a hole, with a good State Store, if there is such a thing. Most every place there is super low end. When they opened that dump, it was more of a mixed bag, but the store owners soon realized the people in the neighborhood weren't going to shop in those conditions. Why would they, when they can go to Walnut Street or if they have to go to a big Mall, Ross Park. There is nothing at the Waterworks for residents, other than a good wine selection.

Scott, I think you can appreciate this. We walk to the Waterworks, so we don't park in front of the Burgatory, or our destination. We have to walk by the bus stop, Giant Eagle and all the way around that crap hole to get anywhere. Ah well, it is what it is and it is there for my lifetime. Sure wish it was a nice downtown like a Sewickley. Man that would have been sweet. Nope, strip mall.

The Water Works mall opened in approximately 1990. Pittsburgh police have been on patrol there since its opening. Since the mall and the water treatment facility is technically Lincoln Larimer, the police must patrol the area. I cant remember a time when I did not see officers on patrol there.
