I have two dogs and three cats. My plan is to drive to Pittsburgh from San Francisco with the dogs and have my kids fly back with the cats. This seems like the best way to handle it. I'd love to hear from anyone else who has moved cross country with pets.

I cannot speak to driving cross country, but I can suggest the Hilton for your sleep stops they are extremely dog friendly! We drove from Asheville to Pittsburgh which is only 8 hours but we had a 30 pound puppy and a 100 pound adult dog in the back seat. Luckily they are really easy going. It was kind of enjoyable we tried to pick stopping points for puppy bathroom breaks where there might be good photo opps to maximize our stops. Are they used to car trips?

We flew our cat up from Miami (he was originally my MIL's cat). With an oral tranq he did fine--he just stayed in the carrier, with petting when possible.

They let you take the carrier on the plane? I'm assuming that with three carriers, we won't be able to. I flew with a tranquilized dog years ago and she was too big to be in the cabin. I was super worried, but everything went fine.

They actually have pet airlines and pet escorts that will be with the animal on connecting flights and make sure it has water and food.

I don't take them in the car that often, but when I do they're fine. As long as I have pet friendly hotels and plenty of pit stops I think it might actually be kind of fun.

Each airline has their own policies I think American has the most flexible policies but I'm not positive: Traveling With Pets | American Airlines Pet Policy On AA.com

We tired them out took them on a long walk & to a park and let them run so being in the car was just a nice nap time for them.

Yep. It was one of our carry-ons.

I'd at least check--off hand, I don't see why that would violate the carry-on policy, although it might violate some specific pet policy.

Edit: Looking at that AA policy, it may be true we had to "reserve" a space in advance (not a seat, but one of the carry-on slots for pets). I don't recall. I also don't recall if we paid a special fee.

That's so cool! Those weren't around the last time I flew with a pet. I'll definitely look into it.
