Had time to kill at work, made a map of what I believe are the free parking areas in and around Schenley Park. There might be some you did not know about!

The museum lot is a good call if you're going to be there six hours (I believe) or less. It's $5 for either 3-6 hours or 3-8 hours, but then it jumps to $10. It's among the cheapest parking in the immediate vicinity if you're within the $5 window.

Your most frugal option is still going to be parking further out and walking. I can tell you that there are often spots available on the Anderson Loop in Schenley Park.

I think the Darlington Rd section at the top of the golf course (between Forbes and the Serpentine) should be purple and not yellow. I don't think there are any restrictions for parking up there. The only issue would be your car getting hit by errant golf balls.
