I have been tempted to head north sometime before it gets too cold to check out some of the "beach" towns along the Erie Coast in Ohio. I have been reading up on areas like Geneva-on-the-lake and Conneaut.

Clear Creek State Park up in Jefferson/Forest Counties near the ANF has a pretty neat sandy beach/swimming area, although it's somewhat small. If you go in the water be prepared for the "Arctic Ocean Experience", though.
