Generally speaking, Pittsburgh seems a mix of Midwestern and Appalachian in its culture and topography. I've noticed very few Northeastern traits here. However, in some of Pittsburgh's suburbs--I'm specifically referring to Ben Avon, parts of Emsworth, Sewickley, Sewickley Heights, Edgeworth, and parts of Leetsdale--you feel as if you're in New England. I've talked with several residents of those towns, and they agree, the towns seem very much like quaint parts of CT, MA, the Hudson Valley in NY, or the North Shore of Long Island. Most of Pittsburgh, however, has much more in common with Cincinnati (Pittsburgh is very similar to Cincinnati in terms of its architecture and topography, and somewhat similar in terms of its culture.) or Cleveland than with Philadelphia, NYC, or Boston.

The Mid-Atlantic states, also called middle Atlantic states or simply the mid Atlantic, form a region of the United States generally located between New England and the South Atlantic States. Its exact definition differs upon source, but the region often includes Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Washington D.C., New York, Virginia, and West Virginia. North Carolina is sometimes also included. When discussing climate - Connecticut (especially southern Connecticut) is often included with the mid Atlantic region. The Mid-Atlantic has played an important role in the development of American culture, commerce, trade, and industry.[4]

It Will Never End - Everyone and Everything that matters, outside of City Data, places Pittsburgh in the Northeast. Pittsburgh Natives on the street will tell you 1 of 2 things, either Pittsburgh is Northeast or it's "East Coast" using the pop culture term of course. The only yahoos that try to claim Pittsburgh isn't NE are the elitist snobs of the Coast who's definition of Northeast is synonymous with the I-95 corridor!

Interior, Appalachian, Great Lakes, Mid-Atlantic, and Whatever other denotation. The Burgh is NORTHEAST! It is however not Coastal.

All I know is that if you go to AAA and pick up a map of the Midwest, Pittsburgh ain't on it.

Pittsburgh has hills. Hawaii has hills. Therefore Pittsburgh is a Pacific island city.

LOL this reminds me of a time I was visiting NYC and a guy I was talking to asked me where I was from and I said Pittsburgh of course. I will never forget what he said to me, "I have heard good things about Pittsburgh, but I have never made it out west."
