My wife and I are big fans of Taste of India, in Lawrenceville directly across Penn Avenue from Children's Hospital. We usually get carryout, but they recently did renovations inside and out that make "dining in" quite pleasant... a little brighter and nicer than People's.

I'd also vouch for Taj Mahal in Ross, though their buffet was very crowded and a little lacking in vegetarian options.

India Palace, downtown (the one on 5th Ave. NOT the similarly named but different place on 6th across from Lemon Grass, ...which is seriously the worst Indian dining experience I've ever had).
Taj Mahal, North Hills. Usually too much heat for me but still very good food.
People's, Garfield. A lunch buffet standby.

I don't know whether or not its worth traveling all the way from Erie for, but I always like to go to the Taste of India for the buffet which is pretty good.

Also, I like the Indian Spices on 6th Street where the White Tower used to be for curried goat.

There are two restaurants named "India Palace" Downtown? Ughhhh. Never been to the 5th Ave. one... but the 6th St. India Palace is THE WORST Indian dining experience I've ever had. Indian Spices, which is directly adjacent to the 6th St. India Palace is pretty decent.

My favorite Indian restaurant in Pittsburgh is probably Taj Mahal... though I've only been there once for dinner and twice for lunch buffet. The Lamb Madras I had for dinner was incredible. Sweet Lassi was very weak and watery, though.

Udipi Cafe deserves special mention for a "different" type of dining experience. Loved the unique, bold flavors during both of my visits.

Taste of India on Penn is a place I frequented when living in Bloomfield... always had solid meals there.

A lot of people seem to hate India Garden in Oakland... but I've always enjoyed their food.

nope. see my post above. it moved from 5th to 6th.

i only went once in the new location but their buffet has always been excellent. when i worked downtown it was on 5th and i went there a lot. i like spicy food and buffets are usually blander - india palace had some spicy-ish stuff on their buffet and it tasted homemade.

i've never ordered off the menu there, sometimes places with good buffets don't have good menu stuff and vice versa.

No, not the same at all. The ones I am thinking of are two different restaurants.

I had it backwards. India Palace moved from 5th to 6th. Indian Spices (the crappy one) is up closer to where Kenny B's used to be. But they are definitely two different restaurants. City Paper gave Spices a 1.5 star review shortly after it opened, and I thought that was generous.
