Thomas Pastorius, Pittsburgh brewer, dead at 67 - abc27 WHTM

A sad day for lovers of good beer. The obits will say all that needs to be said about Pastorius' career, but for my part, Penn was a refugee in a beer wilderness when I first arrived in Pittsburgh.

I'm drinking a beer right now as I read his obit. It's a craft beer from Maine that I just brought home from Boston, but I'm sure he'd approve of such things. So sad, heard about that on the drive home today but didn't know why. Prostate cancer.

I really admired what he did. He later sold the company but the new owners were driving the brewery into the ground. Fortunately, Pastorius and other investors bought it back. I hope he laid the foundation for Penn Brewery's commitment to quality German beers to live on.

Yes I was wondering about that. The article only says he sold the company in 2010. I know there was more recent action where he and other investors bought it back and brought production back to Pittsburgh. I hope that is on sound footing for the future.

I agree - the new management clearly was on course to wreck Penn, and there was a distinct improvement in quality the recent years following Pastorius' return. In particular, I think Kaiser Pils is excellent and equal, or nearly so, to the best pilsners I have had the good fortune to drink in Bavaria, Austria or Bohemia/Cesko.
