My wife and I are retired and are planning to move to the Pittsburgh area. We know little about the neighborhoods, but we noticed several houses in the Crafton area that are beautiful, well-maintained old homes.

What is the town like? Does it have a walkable shopping area (e.g. Sewickley) or is it strictly a bedroom community for Pittsburgh? Any other comments or suggestions are welcome...thanks!

Dan, i see it's been a while since you posted your question. I hope my answer is still pertinent for you. i was born and raised in crafton, but left for a while when i joined the military. after my service, my career moved me around the country a bit. i've lived in some very nice places but none that matched the feel of crafton. there are more picturesque places but you'll be hard pressed to find the combination of genuinely friendly and helpful neighbors and old timey neighborhood feel that you get here. i was thrilled when i was finally able to return. there are services and shopping that you can walk to and most of the homes here are older and well maintained. my own house is over a 100 years old and still has all the original and elaborate woodwork in it. many residents are multi-generational and live in their family homes. We have several beautiful churches of different denominations and a lot of cooperation between them. There is very little traffic even though we share a border w/ the city of pittsburgh. let me know if you have any specific questions.

Thanks for your reply. We haven't sold our house here yet, so your reply is very relevant. We really liked one house in particular in Crafton (on Hawthorne), but we saw they finally got a contract on it last month. I'm sure there are others, though, so we're still looking there.

Dan

Hawthorne is one of my favorite streets. I think i know the one you are talking about. It is a gorgeous house. There are many others like it in Crafton. Actually, you might be interested to know that Bill Cowher, coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers grew up on Hawthorne St. (I went to high school a year behind him). I think his family still own the home there. Other streets to keep your eye on are S. Linwood, S. Grandview, Bradford, Creighton, and Dinsmore. Those streets have some of the nicest homes of the type you seem interested in and they also have the flattest lots. Of course there are many more. Most of these homes have detached garages that have separate alley entrances. Hope that helps.

Yes, thanks again. We looked at one on Grandview (which did have a grand view) as well, that was really nice. We'll check out the other streets when we return...

Hi Rachelle. i live in Crafton and i can tell you that it is VERY family friendly. it's one of those places where people know who your kids are and keep their eyes on them as well as their own. Crafton is FULL of affordable and large old homes. As far as sports goes, yes, it is definitely an active sports community. Pittsburgh as a whole is very sports oriented, but Crafton especially. we have the pee-wee football, basketball, baseball, soccer, hockey, swimming, etc. kids can safely walk to most of the sports venues.

To give you an idea of how nice a place this is to live, i'll use my daughter as an example: she was born and started school in VA. later we moved to a rural area of Pennsylvania, then moved to the pacific nw for a while. finally we moved to crafton (where i was raised) and settled for good. my daughter joined the service after high school and has moved around the country a bit on her own. she gets discharged later this year and she plans to move back to crafton and settle for good. she told me that of all the places she's ever lived it's the one place that really feels like home. let me know if you have any other questions. where are you located now?

All I gotta say is, "Sharp Edge Creekhouse." That alone would just about seal the deal for me...
