Hi, I just recently moved from a small town in PA to Highland Park (around Stanton/Negley intersection - well about a block or two down Stanton) and I was wondering if this is considered a bad area or not. We haven't had any problems yet and it seems everyone keeps to themselves pretty much. I just want to feel safe at night. Coming from a small town it is a huge change so I was just wondering if I picked the right neighborhood. We were leaning toward Shadyside but we decided on Highland Park b/c it was close and cheaper. My roommate knows not to walk through East Liberty at night (he works in Shadyside), we do use street smarts (lock car doors, lock windows and doors), etc. but we were just wondering if it was a not-so-bad place to live. No rude replies please, I am a nice person and I am just curious.

Thanks a bunch.

Highland Park is relatively safe as far as city neighborhoods go. However what could be considered to be the "worst" part of it is around the Stanton/Negley intersection, especially south of it toward East Liberty. But it's nowhere near the worst parts of the city, and I've never heard of any random crime happening there (property crime might happen but I don't think it's any worse than Shadyside).

Especially coming from a small town I think you have to know the risks

I just moved out of Shadyside. My fiance lived in Etna before we just moved in together. I used to live on the corner of Ellsworth and Negley, so I would just take Negley all the way through Highland Park. We had looked at Highland Park. We took the time to drive through your area at night, and my general observation was that there were still alot of characters roaming the streets at night in that area that look like they are up to no good. Many times we drove through at night and people would be on their steps or porches and would yell things at us, totally unprovoked by me or her. Highland Park is very nice, but my general observation was that the Stanton area was still to close to trouble for me. The police and fire stations are near you though.
