Advertisements

The vocal world of Larry Richert continues to expand. From the most powerful radio station to the television screen, to the sacred field of Heinz Field, to most large radio advertsing campaigns, Larry Richert has dominated Pittsburgh radio and audio for years and continues to expand his vocal reach. My question is, how can one voice dominate a market such as Pittsburgh. Are Pittsburgh advertisers fancied by his voice, to lazy to find other talent or do we lack well spoken, good voice over talent in Pittsburgh ? My guess it's a combination of factors. In the meantime the guy calling the Steelers play on the field at Heinz Field, Waking you up in the morning on am radio, selling cars for Bowser Auto and promoting United Way is really the voice of Pittsburgh.

I generally think of Rick Sebak as being the Voice of Pittsburgh.

Yes, he is a living legend. I don't believe he does advertisements or sporting events, though . . . bless his soul. His voice suits baseball more than football, I think.

The other local "talents" don't seem to come across many ad campaigns they don't like. I also think that the ubiquity of Richert, Paul Alexander, and Bob Pompeani is that the market is both shrinking and incestuous.

Agreed. His voice was the narration at the Carnegie museum today.

And don't forget Jim Merkel. The past voice of 3WS and now does most of the promos/commercials for WPXI.
Seems like he is everywhere too!

To be fair though, Richert is really good at what he does. His voice is kind of perfect for the job. My guess is that people call him first because he has the reputation. The other guys get jobs because they're sports guys and advertisers want the celebrity "endorsement."
