OK, I just asked my husband (he of OMA fame) what he thought about this PIT/PGH issue, and he said he thought the city should be PGH to distinguish it from the university. Just one more opinion.

OMA is the bigger city, so he's probably right.

Rem Koolhaas' Office of Metropolitan Architecture?

Incidentially, two of my non-Pgh connected friends here in Berkeley responded "Pgh" when I asked how they might imagine Pgh should be abbreviated. This could mean one of two things: either (a) we are smart urban planning people (which we are) and so they are aware of such conventions in use, or (b) it is somewhat obvious and clear.

Wrong. Guess again.

DH is not an urban planner, either, so it must be that it's just obvious.

Really? DH was the first person I ever met from there, and it wasn't in Pgh that I met him. When my mother asked me where my then boyfriend was from, I told her and she said "Oh good grief!" I think she would have understood California better!

My senile constitutional law professor was born in Omaha. His 101-year-old great-aunt still has brunch regularly with Missy Buffett. He also represented Swissvale Area School District in the Woodland Hills case.

/themoreyouknow

P.S. he thinks it should be PGH, and his opinion count more because he is a gentleman and a scholar.

My best friend was from Omaha! She moved onto our street when I was in 7th grade.

I knew dozens of people from Omaha, maybe hundreds, before I met by first person from Pittsburgh.

Thousands probably, since 4.3% of Pittsburghers are from the entire midwest (13,593 people). And so what? I was just having a little fun with city abbreviations.
