Pittsburgh doesn't have rent control.

The transformation of , for example, South Side happened pretty quickly.

When I moved there in the mid 90's, the place was still filled with a lot of working class, section 8, old babushkas sweeping their stoops. There was just the beginning of gentrification.

Now, it thoroughly yuppified and very few oldtimers are left.

It is definitely slower than SF or Brooklyn, but it is a long process. We have a lot more vacant properties than they did.

Also, it isn't that the entire area is going to be nothing but wealthy white people. In my opinion, that's a good thing. It will hopefully reflect the demographics of Pgh across the board rather than being mostly poor black people or wealthy white people. I've noticed more and more non-white and non-black people living in East Lib in the past 2 years. Some working class, others professionals.

Additionally, mostly everybody calls themselves middle class, whether they make 25k or 200k per year - which when somebody says "middle class people moving into there," they are talking about most people.

The number of people making four digit reported income in East Liberty dropped significantly in the last decade. 2010-2020 will be an interesting time for census of the area. That demographic will likely continue be even less, as there are less slum rentals. Also the elderly population living on a fixed income will likely move into nursing homes or pass away and out of their homes or apartments.

when you check into the Hotel Indigo (which most likely will never be built) don't forget to bring your bulletproof vest

That has to be the most worthless security camera picture ever. It looks like they deliberately blurred the obese robber's face.

It is East Liberty. What do you expect? 9:00AM is a bit unusual, but nothing surprises me. Those two have no repect for themselves or anyone else. They were going to get theirs I guess. They be owed.

Whatever. It will always be like that. The government won't let supply and demand form the city. It is all about subsidies and keeping some folks in place and not allowing a natural migration so the wealthy people can take over the better areas and make the city great again. It is what it is and yes, in our lifetimes it is hopeless due to government intervention.

This story raises some questions- like how much cash could a little smoke shop like this in East Liberty have in the first place. Doesn't seem like much of a target unless the thieves are familiar with the store.

And wouldn't it be easier to rob a bank or Whole Foods or Home Depot, where the employees are ordered not to be heroes. I would think that the chance that robbing an independent tobacconist would provoke the possibility of resistance.

Bank = Federal Offense
Big stores, the cashiers can't open the drawer without a manager, so it would take too long.
Little independent store? Easy money.

big stores also have a million witnesses in them, and no easy way to secure the whole space. whole foods is ALWAYS packed, there'd be no way to prevent like 20 people from calling the cops if a robbery happened in there. home depot's not quite as crazy, but still generally busy with people all over a huge space.

and banks have security up the wazoo, cameras, etc and yeah the whole federal offense thing. these kinds of robberies happen much more often at small stores, and there's a reason!
