Today is the 40th anniversary of the most famous play in NFL history. It's the play that binds all Pittsburghers together, and turned the Steelers into a dynasty.

I'm not a sports person, and it's possible that it is only special to me because of my family history. True Pittsburghers know what it means to them.

Happy anniversary to Franco Harris, Uncle Jim, Cousin Pav, and the entire Steeler Nation.

Remembering the Immaculate Reception - ESPN

Rest in peace, Sammy.

I am not bound together with anyone because of a football play.

Thanks to the wall-to-wall coverage of a football play by the local media, it's doubtful anyone has forgotten it. Even people like me who weren't born yet. I wonder what trivial issue the media will obsess over to an embarrassing extent in 2013.

The most significant thing about it for me is it reminds us that playoffs used to be in December, and the season didn't run through early February.

I'm pretty sure that you have to have been living in Pittsburgh in 1972 and old enough at the time to follow football for this to mean much to you.

Franco is a real nice guy and he cycles around Pittsburgh which is a plus. He also has a kicking lasagna recipe. The play was no doubt a lot of fun and a great time in tough times for Pittsburgh. Something to cheer about, but few saw it live. Back then it wasn't on TV automatically. It was blacked out in Pittsburgh so no one saw it, if memory serves. Glad for Franco and the fact that he still lives here in Pittsburgh, is cool.

Yeah, you might be right about that. The only reason it means anything to me is because my family is involved with it.

I thought that the Pittsburgh forum might actually have some Steeler fans in it. Apparently I was wrong.

I'm sure you'll get some Steelers' fans posting soon. I'm a native San Franciscan and "The Catch" by Dwight Clark in the NFC Championship game against Dallas has the same resonance for me. There was a lot of media coverage on the 30th anniversary not too long ago.

I lived in Pittsburgh in 1972, and knew even less about football then than I do today. I only heard of this "Immaculate" business this week, when I encountered it on both the news and the Post-Gazette website. One of life's major minor annoyances is the assumption on the part of sports narcissists (Steeler Nation? GMAB) that everyone cares as much about sports as they do.
