The hotel construction is welcomed by VisitPittsburgh, the region‘s tourism promotion agency. But if Pittsburgh is to bring major conventions to the area, it must have at least a 1,000-room hotel connected to the David L. Lawrence Convention Center, Downtown, Davis said.

Guess the question is, is Downtown and the immediate surrounding area adequately covered?
And what is a "yert"?
right, but that doesn't mean it's wise to subsidize hotels. the market, so far, has indicated there's room for growth at a measured pace (see first article). Philadelphia is still behind boston in number of rooms but that doesn't mean they can simply build more rooms to match boston's number. it doesn't work like that. when you subsidize rooms in excess of what the market will bear, you lower occupancy and average rates which hurts the bottom line of existing operators. sorry, had misspelled it.

there are yurt hotels, actually.

"The developer - jilted when the sale of the August Wilson Center went to the Pittsburgh Foundation - has three projects in the works within city limits, GreatStay Hospitality partner Matthew Shollar said. He declined to specify locations but noted one would be a substantial project Downtown.

“We are in the midst of dealing with a very exciting Downtown project that will bring another hotel with a unique set of features to Pittsburgh,” said Shollar of Squirrel Hill. “We’ve been interested in preservation and in adaptation.”

More big news coming!

Devil's Advocate here, but why would anyone want to choose Pittsburgh to host their convention when it's so damn expensive to fly into the city in the first place?

You have to look at the WHOLE package, and that includes the potential cost of airfare to convention participants. Because PIT is no longer a hub for any (major) airline, it's almost more expensive to fly to Pittsburgh than it is to fly to Paris or London from other major cities.

This is why Las Vegas consistently wins the lion's share of the convention business; there's a flight coming into the city practically every five minutes. And SUCH a glut of hotel rooms that there's always an unbelievable deal there, too. And, of course, the entertainment. As much as I love Pittsburgh, I can't think of anyone who'd get as excited about participating in a convention in Pittsburgh as they would Las Vegas. Just sayin'.

You have that backwards. If you think it is expensive to fly to PIT now you should have seen it when it was dominated by one airline as a major hub. Because it is no longer a hub it is cheaper to fly here now than in the past.

Local Air service development is based on market demand, not vice versa. In other words, the many flights Las Vegas enjoys is because the market built a demand for them. The market was not built because it was preceded by great air service. Las Vegas' convention business thrives because of the glut of cheap hotel rooms as you correctly point out, which in turn drives up demand for air service.

Also because it is, after all, LAS VEGAS.

Which, to be perfectly honest, in comparison makes a trip to Pittsburgh look about as appealing as an outing to the library on a sunny Saturday afternoon with your aunt Fannie wearing your Sunday best.

I have friends that travel to Vegas a few times a year for conventions, and they hate every second of it. Vegas is a see it once type thing for most people.
