I found a great deal on a rent to own house there. I am not in a place that I could commit to buy at the moment but want to as soon as possible. The rent is great, house is great, price is great.... so what's the catch? Whats the scoop on this place? I have never been to Pitt in my life I plan to come up in a few weeks but I only have 2 days so I want to narrow things down prior to that. Any input would be appreciated. How are the schools? Safety?

Duquesne dissolves high school - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

This is why the rent is cheap.

It's definitely not the nicest area.. I wouldn't really recommend it. Then again, I'm not extremely familiar with the area, so there may be some nicer parts of town.

BTW the town of Duquesne has no affiliation with my University, Duquesne. :P

I've figured that out in my research lol... Its so hard coordinating things so I can know what to look at in the 2 days I'll be there when I live 900 miles away! Ugh! I've never been there and after reading a few of these topics I really don't want to end up in the wrong area... I'm a white girl from Southern WV originally, not at all racist but I can read the statistics so I do try to at least put my kids in schools that are no less than 50% white. I've lived in some big bad mean cities. Orlando is pretty darn bad! They hide it from the outsiders well so they don't kill tourism. Its really unsafe there. And St Louis, I really didn't feel was that bad but I lived in the burbs. I have no prob with the burbs in most cases I just want the decent one lol. I'd rather commute than put my kids in a crappy school. I'll be working at Children's Hospital and from my understand Oakland is NOT the place to live. Hmmm... oh and I loved the "southern redneck" thread, can't wait til I hear how ya'll talk up there lol!

I would highly recommend avoiding the Duquesne area, it is easily one of the worst areas not in the city limits (even including the city limits for that matter). There are many affordable areas that are far better.

My sister lived in Duquesne for many years. She owned all four houses on a corner. Her brother in-law was a Duquesne cop that lived right next door. The break ins and trouble got to be so bad, she picked up and moved without even bothering to sell the houses. IT'S THAT BAD.

Duquesne is a depressed former mill town. You can do better than that without breaking the bank. Bloomfield is a nice urban neighborhood located near Oakland. It serves as Pittsburgh's Little Italy, and is pretty safe. It is very much an East Coast style big city neighborhood, with mostly row and stoop fronted housing, so if a yard is a must, it's probably not the place for you.

These are pretty typical of housing in Bloomfield.
