How long would the Beaver Ave business district have been, in blocks? Does anyone know? The pictures always make it look as expansive as Carson Street. Very sad.

The plan for the Mexican War Streets looks absolutely abysmal. Thank goodness that didn't happen.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the massive portion of E Ohio Street wiped out for both Route 28 and 279?

North Side took the biggest hit with construction of the highways, Three Rivers Stadium, and that stupid Allegheny Center Mall.

They basically gutted North Side in the 50s, 60s and 70s.

Just looked it up on a map from 1890... looks like approximately 12-13 blocks long. It also looks like the next street west of it (Market Street) was pretty prominent as well?

To be absolutely 100% fair, St. Paul took out an entire neighborhood when building a freeway, and there are some sections of downtown Minneapolis that look very similar to your photos, tall 1920s red brick or stucco structures surrounded by newer glass/steel skyscrapers. I wouldn't say that they have "very little" history left. They even have a ruin on the edge of downtown.

The East Street Valley was a lively and populous neighborhood, ripped out for I-279 as well. Only the neighborhood church, St. Boniface, and a handful of houses nearby were saved from the wrecking ball.

I remember going out there back in the day making it out to West View Park as a kid.

Pittsburgh has a somewhat poor record on preservation. However, so do most other cities. The large number of historic buildings we have left I think is more a representation of how large our city was in the past.

One of the best preserved cities I have ever visited is York, PA.

Why hasn't anyone pointed out that the spectacular video was made by our own Allegheny Angel? Great job on that.

As a new resident of Deutschtown... I can only dream about how vibrant and bustling today's North Side would be if the historic heart of this section of the city wasn't demolished for that alien monstrosity known as Allegheny Center Mall. Perhaps the old "Downtown" of Allegheny City was struggling 50 years ago due to the common urban ailments of the time... but if it would've remained intact... I'm confident it would be at the heart of the North Side's resurgence today. It's also very irritating to have to slowly navigate around Allegheny Center when trying to get from Deutschtown to Allegheny West. Everything about that development was designed in the most horrific, inhuman way possible.

Also... I hate how so much prime real estate in the North Side was destroyed by that spider-web of highways that criss-crosses everywhere. Deutschtown sliced in half... North Side residential neighborhoods disconnected from the riverfront...
