6 businesses that drive Pittsburgh region to thrive | TribLIVE

Not what you'd expect.

Black Box
Elliott Group
US Steel
PPG
Compunetix
MSA

I've always loved the name of Black Box.

No PNC Bank? They've done more for Downtown Pittsburgh in the 21st Century than anyone (or thing) else in the region.

It's not about which company has done the most for downtown. It's about which companies drive the regional economy.

PNC also meets that criteria IMO.

I agree. It employs many people and has the annual revenue to match those companies.

But it's nice to learn about other big hitters in the region, especially ones we wouldn't expect.

While the article didn't claim them to be the top six, I wish the article explained why it chose to only highlight them.

I agree. Of course I think there are way more than just six companies that have major impact on the region.

By underpaying the same employees that consistently generate exceptional sales revenue for them?

Though they are located in the city whereas besides US Steel (moving out) & PPG, none of the other businesses listed are.

Yes... because your personal story of unfulfilled and unreasonable salary expectations sums up the totality of PNC's impact on the regional economy.

It's an unfortunate fact of the corporate world today, but very few people actually get paid for performance. The only exceptions are high ranking people (Directors, VPs, C-levels, etc.) that get bonuses, people working for tips or commission, and factory works who get incentive pay. In your typical white or gold collar job, working your ass off will earn you a 3% raise instead of a 2% raise, if even that. It's counterintuitive, but the fastest way to increase your salary is to switch jobs, whether at another company or through an internal transfer.
