Aside from Batman and Perks of Being a Wallflower, it seems like all the movies that have been filmed around here have been flops.

Is that a bad average? I think most movies are flops. Also, Love and Other Drugs was too successful to be called a flop.

Hopes, did you see Perks of Being a Wallflower? The Pitt Tunnel had a fairly prominent cameo. Wasn't bad for a teen movie.

Although I don't think Jack Reacher made the numbers the studios wanted with a Tom Cruise action flick it was still profitable and got above average reviews. Same thing with Next Three Days

I offer 'Silence of the Lambs' as evidence against that. It won five Oscars. While it wasn't entirely filmed in Pittsburgh, the majority of it was filmed in the region: The Silence of the Lambs (1991) - Filming locations

Useless relation: At the end of the movie when Starling catches Buffalo Bill at his house, they were filming in this tiny place of Layton, Fayette County. This is five minutes away from my grandparents house. My Dad use to point out the house to me when we would head to my grandparent's house. Pretty cool, I think.

'Sudden Death' was awesome in its own right. (I was in the stands as an extra when they were filming hockey scenes. Pretty repetitive, but pretty cool).

I assume fleetiebelle was referring to movies made within the past 5 years.... the latest "film renaissance" after a long fallow period.

I would say fleetiebelle's characterization of "every Pittsburgh film flopping" is incorrect. There have been some flops "Promised Land", "Won't Back Down", "The Road", "One for the Money", "The Warrior", the complete disaster that was "The Mysteries of Pittsburgh" (which ironically contributed to jumpstarting the latest film production renaissance).

Batman was an obvious blockbuster... and "Unstoppable" was a semi-blockbuster. The rest are solid mid-tier performers... or profitable movies that didn't meet expectations "The Next Three Days", "Jack Reacher".

Okay, so "flop" wasn't exactly the right word, but most of the movies,( like most movies, I guess) have made very little box office or critical impact.

I thought Jack Reacher was a pretty good showcase for the city looks-wise. Though some of the scenes that have the city looking the prettiest are also disturbing for other reasons.

I thought it also did the best of not having many ridiculous continuity problems (which would if course only be noticed if you're from here) of say walking out of a building in Oakland & magically being downtown (next three days); having a long chase that is just making a couple block loop over & over (batman) etc.
