That's not my understanding, but I'm sure Julie's friends can look further into it. My understanding is that the med school degree itself is fine, but they'd be expected to move back and do their residency here in a US hospital (and pass US exams), if that's what they actually wanted to do (move back to the US). It would still save on med school money.

There are surely ways around it since there's plenty of brain drain into the US from other western countries in the medical field.

Well, it's the daughter's choice. Since she grew up in the US and in Europe I don't think she'd mind working over there.

I'm sure there's a more detailed information out there but this "best answer" provides insight.

Is A medical school degree from france acceptable in America? - Yahoo! Answers

My girlfriend's husband is a MD from Canada. Even though it's easier to move between Canada and the US, there are still hoops to jump through.

The reason so many foreign doctors are willing to go through the hassle is because it pays more to be a doctor here.

My kids also have dual citizenship. However, if they were to go to college in Ireland which costs about 3,000 euros a year, they would have to go there and complete their leaving certificate which is their high school graduation exam. Otherwise they would be a foreign student and it would cost about 9000 euros a year.
On the medical student subject ; my sil went to medical school in Ireland and did all her residencies here in the states. She had to do some exams right after graduating in Ireland (boards I think) and then she got into residencies here.
Then my son's godfather went to medical school in Germany. He had to learn the language and then once he finished medical school, he did his residency in Northern Ireland ; having to relearn some medical terms in english. He has been a doctor in Ireland for many years and now hates it so he may go to Canada where they are crying out for doctors for a few years. The reason ; the pay at home stinks. He and his partner who is a teacher, have tenants in their house just to help pay the mortgage.

Medicine isnt all its cracked up to be anymore.

They need to look into this carefully. Hopes is correct. One thing is in France one enters medical school directly from high school. The course of study is about 6 years, then there is the residency.

Keep in mind that Detroit is on this list. I don't know how many of you have been there recently, but there is nothing appealing about that city at all. Any list with Detroit on it, at least a list of good places to live, is a fraudulent list.
