Its a long way until the next election, maybe someone with vision and inspiration will emerge by 2016.

Although, personally, I think there is a pending crisis in health care development and delivery that will probably be have to be addressed first during the next election cycle.

Not to point out the obvious but we'd probably have a heck of a lot more money to spend on roads and bridges here in the US if we hadn't spent all our money in the last decade on blowing up other country's infrastructure.

As I've said before, Democrats love big infrastructure projects until they're built nearby, and Republicans love big infrastructure projects until it's time to pay for them.

Just think about how much more money we'd have for infrastructure if Democrats didn't waste so much money on failed social programs, and Republicans didn't waste money on the military-industrial complex.

Or the last 50 years on Lyndon B. Johnson's unsustainable "Great Society" programs, for that matter. Neither political party has their hands clean.

Yeah, because trying to help the poor is just as bad as invading other countries.

The Great Society programs did help. Before it the national poverty rate was about 20% and after it was in place it had dropped to 11-12%

I don't know, the feds built a lot of highways during the 1920's, when tens of millions of Americans switched from horses to automobiles.

Of course back then, the government could use prison labor to reduce costs.

Or do like President Roosevelt did, and establish a WPA where welfare recipient had to work for their relief checks.

I can't imagine the government going to the long term unemployed and requiring work in exchange for their food stamps or other governmental assistance nowadays. The construction unions would have a conniption over that. And needless to say, chain gangs are the height of political incorrectness.

Just because the "poverty rate" went down since the 1960's doesnt indicate cause and effect.

What is the "national poverty rate" anyhow? Sounds like a pretty subjective statistic.
