I am disgusted but not surprised. I believe this incident was completely the mother's fault and was the result of her negligence, just like cases where people leave babies in hot cars, drive small children without car seats, or leave swimming pools unsecured. She is fortunate to have not been charged--I suspect that a babysitter engaging in a similar action would have been.
I have no doubt they were approached by lawyers but they did not have to get on board. if they are succesful I will lose any respect I ahve for the legal process.
I wish there was some way to support the zoo in this.

Most likely this is attorney betting there will be some settlement rather than fight because the settlement might be cheaper. If looking for large payout though I don't think it's in that equation; if they're looking to get millions then that will go to court as I don't think the defense would cost millions.
The statement claims the zoo knew about many people lifting their children up there. If true, that is interesting but does not necessarily equate to the zoo being negligent. I think there's a certain reasonability factor in that determination. I mean, in theory you can get over the fence and jump into the moat at the tiger, gorilla and probably a few other exhibits. You could jump into the sea lion pool pretty easily. I'm sure it's not the only zoo set up like that. Where does it stop? Finding the zoo negligent here would have significant repercussions for all zoos I would think.

If the Derkoshes ARE awarded the $300,000+ they are seeking, then it would be nice if each city resident donated $1 to offset that financial hit to the zoo. I'm just hopeful that the zoo's liability insurance will pick up the tab, and I'm also hopeful any resulting increase in insurance premiums to the zoo won't come at the expense of the care of its animals or exhibits.

I think there's very little chance that an award like that is a complete $300k financial hit to the zoo. They will have insurance. There may be a hit in increased premiums but it won't be $300k worth.
Increase in other expenses will always come at the expense of...something. But the zoo is generally in good shape I think. If they were just barely making it they wouldn't be able to keep the animals they do and maintain what they do have.

Yeah, I do think this is a good reason for people to donate to the zoo, if they want to show support for them and what they add to the community. I know I will be.

The zoo is an accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and will be through at least September 2017, which means it underwent inspections in the summer of 2012 in order to receive that accreditation. The Painted Dog exhibit was presumably just fine to the AZA at that time, therefore the exhibit met the standards of the predominant accreditation organization for zoos, and so therefore the parents ought to sue the AZA if they truly think their standards are too lax.
I'm guessing this is more an effort to win a settlement than it is an attempt to bring a guilty party to justice, but that doesn't make it smell any better.

What's the problem?
It's their fundamental right to sue anyone for anything. A judge or jury will decide if the suit has merit. If not the case will be tossed out.
I know that's not ideal... If we lived in a perfect world there would be a group of highly trained intelligent people who would decide whether or not a lawsuit has merit or is waste of time... If they decided that the lawsuit was a waste of time they could throw it out right away, but if they decided it was reasonable they could take a closer look... In this crazy fantasy world we could call this closer look a trial and we could call these people judges. It'd be awesome.

I just can't find it in myself to get outraged or judgmental over this. It's easy to say now that I would never sue in that situation, but I'd assume that causing a child's brutal death would be enough to severely alter my mental state and capabilities. I wouldn't be able to think rationally either if I were in the same situation.
I do hope the zoo decides to fight and not offer a settlement.

And it's everyone's "fundamental right" to call into question the morals and ethics of these parents for suing, if they so choose. You know, freedom of expression, opinion, speech, and so on, they sort of rank well above the alleged "freedom to sue" other people for one's own negligent decisions. I haven't noticed many posts, if any, that say the lawsuit shouldn't even been legally allowed to be "filed." The posts are
about the choice the parents have made and what it says about them.

Parents sue Pittsburgh Zoo in dog mauling death of boy, 2 - Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
At first I was sympathetic with the Derkosh family and shared their grief that a precious child was killed so tragically. I viewed the mother's error in judgment as just that---a very unfortunate mistake. Now I see the Derkosh family as nothing but money-grabbers who are looking to displace blame for their own recklessness and irresponsibility as parents onto the zoo, and I hope they become pariahs in the community as a result.
I'm still sympathetic to the family.
The zoo has already taken numerous steps to insure that it can't happen again, placing barriers so that you can't even get into the cage. I'm not even sure if the exhibit is open, and last I heard they were working out a way to send the wilddogs somewhere else so that they themselves wouldn't become some kind of sick attraction.
Its horrifying what happened to their kid. My mother in law and wife wanted to take our 16 month old to the zoo this weekend, and I made them change their plans because I was uncomfortable with her being there.
Not rational or logical in the least on my part , but the whole incident still makes my stomach turn just to think about with the little boy, let alone if it had been my child. Its going to creep me out for a while.
I don't really know what to say about the parents. I don't blame them for suing because the zoo should've known better, and if they ignored warnings given to them about people putting their kids on the railing that is extremely negligent on their part. The parents will get a pay day. I don't think its them trying to displace blame at all. The mother was there when it happened. She knew why the child died, and was restrained lest she would have gone in after him.
This is either them trying to force the zoo's hand into seriously reviewing many of their policies towards containment of the animals AND the humans there to see them, or trying to offset the money they've lost on funeral expenses/taking time away to grieve. If the former sounds silly to you, let me assure you that if you wanted to commit suicide by Tiger (for whatever reason) the only thing preventing you from doing so is a 2.5ft high pole fence that you would have to lift a leg over so maybe...just maybe the zoo hasn't taken the incident seriously.
Maybe they are just mad and looking to displace blame, and I say they are entitled to it . No one deserves to watch their child die as it is a hell worse than anything you'll ever know. If they want to blame the zoo and if it gives them the slightest peace then let them have it.
Personally. If my kid gets mauled to death like this I'm not alive to sue. I'm either dead in the cage trying to get her out/be a meat shield, or I'm dead after the fact because living isn't really worth the suffering you'll endure at that point after the child has died.
