I wonder if the forum collective knowledge can help in any way with my wife's job search. She's a highly experienced, masters-level educated nurse (neonatal speciality) and started exploring job opportunties at UPMC in April, shortly after we moved here. Before then she'd worked for 7 years at a hospital in WA in a general nursing position.

There's lots of jobs advertised on the UPMC website, and she's applied online for 15-ish in last 3 months.

Apart from confirmations of the application submissions, she's heard nothing about any of the positions until today, when an email notification informed her that one of the positions she applied for in April had been canceled. She's also tried to talk to recruiters and ask about open positions, but despite multiple voice messages and emails, has had no response. Not one.

If anyone else has had experience with trying to get a position at UPMC, especially in nursing, any/all advise would be massively appreciated. Right now, the whole situation is slightly more confusing than than trying to understand why Pittsburgh taxis rarely pick you up when they say they will

The human resource department at UPMC tends to move at a snail's pace when it comes to open positions.

She needs to network. Just filing applications will continue to be low yield. May get lucky anyway but knowing people helps immensely.

She sounds very qualified. I haven't worked in Pgh for decades, so I have no concrete advice. Good luck.

Managed to talk to a recruiter today - finally. Apparently for {all|many} jobs, internal candidates get preference. Good to know, although not terribly useful. At least my wife spoke to a human being and has sent her resume direct. It's a start. Hopefully ....

Networking these days can even include things like participating on their facebook or linkedin page. A friend of mine got hired at UPMC after attending a free HR info session they held and meeting the key people there (he found out about it from their FB page and sounded very in-tune with their message since he read their posts).

the units at children's with the biggest staff and therefore the biggest turnover are the PICU and the NICU. she might try targeting those. children's has nursing open houses periodically too, and you can make very good connections there. dm me and i can give you some names to look for.

upmc just had layoffs so there may be hiring freezes in some departments. i definitely wouldn't limit myself to upmc if i was a nurse, in any case.

thx - she's on FB page and has attended a 'how to get hired' seminar two weeks ago, which was useful. Hopefully slowly breaking down the fortress walls
