Had to drive to the McDonald's at the corner of 88 and South Park road from The Great White North today. Man, driving down 51 and then 88, what a PITA. I lived in the South for 12 years, forgot how wretched the traffic is. Would it be that tough to time the frickin' traffic lights?

Back in 2010, the American Institute of Architects sent one of their "Sustainable Design Action Teams" to look at the Rt. 51 corridor for what could be done to improve it. For the most part they ended up with big, big (read: damn improbable) ideas like knocking down a lot of the businesses along one or both sides of the road through a lot of the Pittsburgh stretch so the corridor could be "green" again and less prone to flooding.

They proposed a few big developments that would connect up the hill to where the T and South Busway run, along with creating more of a "town center" around the existing developments in Brentwood and Jefferson Hills. They also proposed "daylighting" most of Century III Mall to make it more like parts of The Waterfront, which Simon Properties had scoffed at, but looking at the state of the mall now and its new ownership, hey, anything's possible.

The more realistic stuff in the report included facade improvements, re-using some of the strip malls and cutting down on their number of driveways, even putting in medians and walking paths. Here's a link to the report (large .pdf download): http://www.aia.org/aiaucmp/groups/ai...aiab086622.pdf
