Outbound West Carson Street to close for 2 years - Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Quote:
Traffic will be detoured via the West End Bridge, Route 65 and the McKees Rocks Bridge
Looks like I'll be exiting at Allegheny or Marshall for the next two years.

I'm shocked that this will take 2 years of total closure. The article doesn't mention it, but didn't we have another article posted a few weeks ago that said a bike lane would be going in on W. Carson?

The road is in deplorable condition, so it needs to be done.

6 days to complete in Japan. Just a friendly reminder of how laughably inefficient we are.

I wonder if this will be the final nail in the coffin for Esplen. Not great for Sheraden either.

What the hell are they going to do with buses which use the West Busway. I've been taking the 28X to the airport as of late, and it seems it will be totally screwed on the return trip to Pittsburgh. Maybe they'll route it down Chartiers?

2 completely different types and scopes of projects. With that being said, we are still very inefficient. I bet they'll only be working a single shift per day and take off on bad weather days (boo hoo it's raining).

I've started wondering about our effeciency since this rt 28 project started... if the workers were around the clock, rt 28 would be done by now.

Outbound will be closed, so you should be OK on the return trip. My guess is the outbound bus will take West End Circle to Steuben to Chartiers through Elliot back to the busway. I don't know why total closure outbound is neccesary. Perhaps they could reverse the lane to outbound from 3-7 PM? Maybe this would be too confusing for detour routes. I think the impact on the morning commute would be worse, so I am glad they are leaving an inbound lane open.

It seems like a little long for a total outbound closure. It would be nice if a little creativity could be used as was done with Rt. 28.

Also, i think this will include the new bike lanes.

Most of Carson is just too narrow to maintain traffic both ways during construction.

I've noticed any roadwork in PA takes 3-5x longer than here in VA. then again its taking 4 years to build the metro and it took 4 years to expand the beltway but that's quick since its an Australian company who paid for it and is making money off those toll lanes.

but still it seems any work takes a bit longer in pa. the bridge in Trafford is still closed and its been 2 years lol.

It sounds like the majority of the heaviest work will be on the section from the Corliss St. Tunnel to McKees Rocks. This section contains the viaduct under the roadway that needs to be reconstructed. They will also apparently be lowering this section of road under the railroad bridge. I wonder why they can't split the project up into two one year phases: one phase from West End Bridge to the Corliss Tunnel and the other from the tunnel to McKees Rocks. In this way, a portion (say 50%) of the population that use the road will be inconvenienced for the full 2 years while the people who use the Corliss Tunnel and Busway would only experience a one year detour.
