I went there as did my brother and my cousins and we all have the same story, it was truly awful and continues to be. I can pull stats and articles too if you'd like to back that up. If I had kids I wouldn't send them there and it's not because of some passing judgement I made from an article.

Butttt I guess personal experiences + stats + articles = not as good as your own personal feelings on the matter.

I don't forsee Carrick HS turning around any time soon. That said, I do think Brashear will likely be quite different in the future.

Basically it really lucked out in terms of the feeder changes which took place last year. It previously had some sections of the Hill District and Hazelwood, which are now in UPrep and Allderdice respectively. In return, it gained the West End, which has some bad neighborhoods, but mostly isn't that rough outside Sheraden. All of the rough parts of the southern hilltop go to Carrick.

So Brashear now has has all of the West End, SS Flats, Mount Washington, Duquense Heights, Banksville, Beechview, Brookline, and Overbrook. I expect that as a result, test scores will begin climbing higher than Carrick (they already were a bit, since Brashear had a few magnet programs), which might start off a "virtuous cycle" - particularly because more middle-class parents are sending their kids to neighborhood public schools in Brookline and Southside Flats.

I think the OP should look into Mt. Lebanon. There are a fair amount of rentals there. Great place for a single female in her 30's.
