This will be the first of a new national chain. Looks like it will be great!

Yeah, it's a prototype by Dick's (local based company), and it's in the prior location of the Dick's store in Cranberry (which has since been moved into a new 2-story free-standing store over next to Target).

There's a need for this in Pittsburgh. My husband's friends drive out of state to buy fly rods.

Well, it'll probably still be more fun to go down to Cabela's. I just think it's good the building isn't sitting empty forever. It really wasn't empty very long at all. I couldn't figure out what would use it and thought it might be a while until this was announced a few months ago.

And agreed. Dick's really doesn't have a good selection of outdoor equipment nor does Dunhams. The Gander Mountain in West Mifflin is good, but this will be great. I'll have to check it out once its open

This store is Dick's response to the huge backlash they got when they pulled all semi-automatic rifles and related products from store shelves after Sandy Hook. Many people vowed that they would never shop at another Dick's again because of their knee jerk reactions against consumers (such as canceling orders for rifles weeks after customers placed them, then trying to refund them with store credit). It appears that they're trying to redeem themselves with a firearms-forward store, but people still have their Sandy Hook reaction still fresh in their mind. I won't be giving them business.

I really doubt Dick's whipped up an entirely new store concept in only a few months just because of some Sandy Hook backlash. Things like this take years of research and planning to execute. This looks like it slots in between REI and Cabela's, and Dick's has been moving towards niche concepts for a while (see True Runner).

The thing is that the firearms industry has seen ammo availability decrease drastically due to high demand. Dick's has invested $8 million dollars to fill this ONE store with ammunition in order to bring people in. Keep in mind that this is the same company pulled rifles/magazines/and in some cases ammunition off shelves, so such a huge investment is a drastic change of face. To me this screams "hey sorry about that, come to the only place in town to get ammunition folks!"
