i think there are two groups of PGH drivers: in one group, these folks run red lights, turn left on red and roll through stop signs while also speeding atleast 15 mpg over the speed limit in residential roads.

then there are the other group, those who seem lost while driving on the road looking like they just moved here.

why do i say this? i semi witnessed a car accident last night on my street. as i was trying to pull out on stanton ave, i see a car going what appeared to be 40+ lost control at the curve and wrecked into the rail. Neighbor told me this happens often on the road. luckily noone was seriously hurt (i pulled up to them 40 seconds after it happened, turned blinkers on and parked on the road). someone else called 911.

on a side note: regardless of which group folks fall in, it seems noone even bothers to slow down ahead of time when they see a parked car with blinkers on in the middle of the road. nearly 3-4 car almost rear ended my car lol.

i know what you mean, BC, and see evidence every time i drive or bike in & around the city. But then there are the drivers who, if you're trying to enter a road from a driveway or business, will wave you in; and there are still a few old timers who will flash their headlights to let someone make a Pittsburgh Left when the light changes. This is still a more 'civilized' driving town than, say, Miami or Boston or even the DC area.

im so glad u started this thread as i was thinking this the other day too.....people need to learn how to drive! my biggest peeve is when youre moving along with the flow of traffic and theyres always one or two on the left side passing lane going at or below the posted speed limit and dont move over!
i laugh at myself trying to control my road rage as i sit two cars back shaking my head at whatever is occurring up front and saying to myself....what the hell are they doing!! lol

I commute daily and I have nothing but courteous drivers. Only once had an issue when someone backed into me.

and none for every other city in the country either, I'm sure

My only 'different to west coast' observation is that people drive fast on freeways. Speed limit mostly igmored.I just go with the pack.

Which is an issue in itself.

I think it's pretty well established that we have some of the worst drivers and driving conditions in the country.

Living here really emphasizes the importance of being a good defensive driver. The local PD is far too lax in enforcement.

My personal favorite are the drivers who aren't paying attention to where they're going, discover that they're in the wrong lane and decide to swerve into your lane at the last second. This happens so often that you end up anticipating that every driver is mere moments from making an erratic movement into the path of your vehicle. This makes driving in this town an extremely unpleasant affair. Even better when its on the highway with someone swerving across 3 lanes of traffic to make an exit during rush hour. Happens far too often for it to be explained by human nature and forgetfulness. Drivers in this city aren't paying attention as a matter of practice.

Its also extremely annoying when you see a driver who is clearly lost (droves of them for every Pirates game this summer) when virtually everyone has access to a computer at home or work to be able to look up directions ahead of time. Its never been easier to figure out how to get where you need to be. You can see any map of any city in the US, including satellite images, and even see a first person perspective of standing right in the middle of the street with a 360 degree view of your surroundings.

...and even if you either don't have time or are just to lazy to look it up before you leave most people have the ability to access it anywhere on their smartphones. Just pull the car over, pull the phone out, and get your bearings. How hard is it?

There was a guy on the north side a few weeks ago who copped an attitude because I honked at him. He was stopped in the middle of traffic at a green light holding everyone up while he played with his phone because he claimed that he was lost and looking for a map. Didn't want assistance with directions oddly enough. How hard is it to pull over and figure things out without inconveniencing everyone else? I have a pissed off toddler and a tired wife in the backseat of a car with no AC, but I have to wait 5 minutes for you to pull your head out of your butt and complete the text you're sending?
