Well, I have been told from a confidential source (maybe this should be in Paranormal thread if I told you who?)that I should think about checking out the Pittsburgh area and maybe PA in general.

I have been a Southerner all my life but also I have always hated the culture of the South. I think Southern cuisine is great and the architecture is very nice too (very colonial looking) I enjoy just driving thru small towns and visiting, but something about Southern "culture" (way of life, I suppose?) I despise it all. It is too restrictive, too close minded, too family oriented, too much emphais on the Bible and doing things "their" way...I live in Georgia. The scenery is nice here. Good weather too, mild winters and stuff...A lot of history is evident. But the "culture"? blecch hip hop and ghetto, young women seem obsessed with the "traditional" role of women, they get married and have kids way too young. A lot of racial tension down here, too.

I'm not hasty and not looking to just pull up stakes just on a whim. I'd relocate if maybe the right job (read career move) came along but I would weigh and balance pros and cons first.

I am an artist at heart. Very ecclectic and eccentric too. I have been told I should check out the PA area specifically Pittsburgh, so what do you guys think people who have been here long term?

thanks

It sounds like Pittsburgh could be a good fit for you if you can find a job and can deal with the colder weather.

Pittsburgh is generally a very "live and let live" type of place. A neighbor or coworker may have some bigotted opinions similar to what you hear in the South, but they'll usually keep it to themselves. Case in point I am in a mixed race relationship and we live together unmarried, but nobody cares (or at least nobody says anything if they do care). I'm not sure I could say that if I lived in the Bible Belt.

Pennsylvania has lots of interesting small towns, but Pittsburgh might be your best bet for a more open mindset as well as for jobs. Many of our neighborhoods have a small town vibe anyway.

There's a lot of that here. Folks on here will deny it of course but in my experience I have encountered all 3 of these things time and time again.

On the bright side religious nuts are few and far between and there are artsy-types in certain parts of town.

Philly Cheesesteak is excellent too, I would imagine

I don't mind a little colder. I have lots of cute winter clothes

I guess a good job is my first priority. I don't think I would want to uproot my husband and his job unless he had one too up there, I guess....

I have also noticed that Southerners can be very false and fake, sometimes even hypocritical.

You described the culture a half an hour outside the city of pittsburgh. If you choose to live here do yourself a favor and line up a job first. It may take some time. Then look at the east end and northside inner city neighborhoods. They are the only areas to give you the culture you want.

So move already and find your supposed freedom and happiness in Pittsburgh.
If you were "told via paranormal sources" and you believe them you would not be posting on this forum, you would have already packed and moved.

Pittsburgh is pretty 'southern' & traditional culturally speaking in comparison go other northeast cities; though you also use 'hip hop' & 'ghetto' in describing the southern culture which is confusing.

Maybe Portland or Seattle are a better fit.

I used to live in Atlanta but got a great job in Houston. I'm happy with the move.

I can see where you are coming from. I would suggest Texas but it's still a very "Red" state. Texas has its own culture, not southern at all.

They are false and fake in Portland and Seattle too----full of fake political correctness and extreme passive aggressiveness.

Its not that different in terms of social conservatism. Pittsburgh is one of the most provinicial city in america less progressive and open minded to change than Atlanta. If you move here, you will have to learn to live with very little sun. To second other posters, have a job lined up.
