I've been going to Stebler Auto in Mars since I moved north in 2007.
Great mom & pop shop that may not be the cheapest, but will not rip you off.

Use the internet to diagnose your car troubles. There are online forums for every make and model. Diagnose the problem yourself, then buy the parts you need at the auto parts store of your choosing, or order them online. Find a small, privately owned shop that will charge you for labor to install the parts you bring to them.

In this day and age, there's no excuse for someone to not educate themselves about the things that they own and use on a daily basis. This includes your car. With the internet, you don't need to be a "gearhead" in order to find out what commonly goes wrong with your make and model of vehicle, and how to fix it in the most efficient manner. People need to start being more proactive consumers.
