Well from what I gather those electronic message boards over the parkway(and now on rt51 and other major arteries) cost us taxpayers around 1/4 million $$$ a piece. I almost always see nothing more than an asterisk or "congestion ahead", as if I haven't been able to figure that out without a message board. In this age of government tracking of its citizens, it makes me wonder what their REAL purpose is.

I always wondered why they don't say "Time to [whatever]" like they do in every other city.

Couldn't have wondered too much. Some of them do. "Time to Squirrel Hill Tunnel: 10 minutes" etc.

I think they're listening to your thoughts

I've seen reports that they've tested some of them with putting up the times to exits, but it's not consistent, and I haven't seen it on the north signs yet.

And that's what is displayed also. If you see only an asterisk, you need to get out more.

They have them, near Camp Horne Road.

They are mainly used to display emergency notices (Snowstorms, Flash Floods, Accidents, etc.). Federally mandated since they are on the interstates. I've never seen one on 51 and I highly doubt there is or ever will be since its not an interstate.

There's one on 79 too, southbound before the split. And way down in the city in the East Street Valley. But, what I'm saying is I haven't seen them test the time to exit functionality yet. They have tested this on Parkway East and/or West.

That would be much more useful than than mostly sitting idle. Or saying there's heavy congestion when it has already cleared, that sort of thing.

The signs on the Parkway East & West apparently undergo "rigorous" testing for accuracy of timing. In the article below, it's mentioned that they still aren't 100% satisfied with the estimates:

Parkway West travel time guides give motorists fair warning - Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

In regards to the times posted, I've found that they're usually on the "low" side. Congestion on the outbound Parkway East begins around the Boulevard of the Allies during the week on a "normal" night. That is more than a 10 minute ride for sure. 20 might be a bit more like it. On a bad night, the delays begin around the County Jail or worse, sometimes the delays stretch to the Fort Pitt Bridge. That's, at minimum, 40+ minutes to the tunnel.

With that said, there are digital pole displays on 51. If memory serves be correctly there is one near-ish the Crane Avenue intersection. Also, there is one coming from the West End Bridge approaching the 376 ramp.

I'm only ever on 279 so I guess that's why I never saw them on 376
